Traveling With God to Guyana -- by Dorothy
We recently took a trip into the jungles of Guyana, it was a three mile walk from
where the boat dropped us off. When we got to the church where we were
staying it was dark. We were greeted by some of the villagers with dinner.
We spent the night on the floor under bug nets.
The next morning we walked around the village and meet some of the people.
We watched as they prepared for church. They bathed in the canal, washed
dishes, and dressed. Church started at 9:30 am, the church was no bigger
than your living room. The church was packed with about 75 people. I can't
even tell you how many children were there. You couldn't tell who's child
was who's because everyone would attend to them. Church ended at 1:30 PM.
English is the language of Guyana, but it is very broken. When the people
worshiped some times it was hard to understand what the were saying, but the
one thing that was clear was their Love of the Lord, that came through loud
and clear.
After church I asked the pastor how far the people came, he replied "some as
far as 10 to 15 miles." They walked through the jungle,( most with no
shoes), 10 to 15 miles to attend church, we Americans complain because we
have to drive 10 minutes down the road.
When we returned the next day to the bible school, the men started work on
the floor of the addition to the bible school. They pour the floor by hand.
This work took three days from early morning to late afternoon.
While the men did their work us women did ours. We showed the Jesus movie to the children in the area, mostly Hindu and Muslim. They were
very receptive to the movie and the word of the Lord.
We also taught Sunday school classes during the day for the children. We
held classes at night for Sunday school teachers. We also showed the movie
"Tribulation" at an outdoor showing; the people lined the street to watch,
it was wonderful.
What I learned will stay with me all my life, I will never be the same. The
people I meet are so poor, but no body ever told them. The children laugh
and play in a way our children here don't, they are free of the worries and
cares we have. Life might be hard, but it is peaceful. I have never meet
people with more love and gratefulness; I truly fell in love with them.
God blessed me by sending me there and I praise him for it. I can't wait for
him to send me back.
I Love you all, Dorothy
